Reprezintă o sumare cumulată a zilelor dintr-un sezon de îngheț cu o temperatură zilnică medie a aerului sub zero, în timpul unei perioade date.
Indicele anual de înghețare și dezghețare poate fi util în evaluarea distribuției terenului permafrost și înghețat sezonier, are aplicații importante în inginerie și este un indicator util al schimbărilor climatice la latitudine mare.
