Wildlife monitoring

Most brown bear populations in Europe are being monitored. Monitoring means the regular count or estimation of how many individuals there are in the population.

This number is of importance for wildlife management: as basis for decision-making, for example if conservation measures are required when the numbers are too low, or to set a hunting quota when numbers are too high. Importantly, a regular monitoring scheme helps to check if management decisions and actions of the past have been successful or not.
