Wildlife management

Wildlife management means the regulation of wildlife populations so that its individuals stay healthy, and the number of them stays within an area’s socio-ecological carrying capacity. This is mainly carried out by altering the number of individuals, for example by prohibiting or allowing hunting of the species in question.

Wildlife management may also include restricting the access by humans to an area, to minimize disturbance. Sometimes the removal of certain animal individuals is also necessary, for example, a large carnivore that has unusually high rates of predating on livestock. Wildlife management aims to consider balancing the requirements of both humans and wildlife.
