A type of cold air mass that forms over land or water in the higher latitude, within the subpolar highs, especially prevalent in the late fall, winter and early spring.
Continental polar air (cP) has low surface temperature low moisture content. Maritime polar air (mP) initially possesses similar properties to those of continental polar air, but in passing over warmer water it becomes unstable with a higher moisture content. This air mass is notorious for producing fog, drizzle, cloudy weather and long lasting light to moderate rain.
