Znajduje się ona w miejscu, gdzie nacisk nadwodnej części lodowca równoważony jest siłą wyporu jego części podwodnej. Z pływającej części lądolodu mogą odrywać się góry lodowe obejmujące jego całą miąższość – tworzą się płytowe góry lodowe o powierzchni dochodzącej do setek km2.
