Metanogener er arkebakterier som i pusteprosessen produserer metan – en brændbar drivhusgas som er produseret ved anaerob nedbrydning af planteaffald. De fleste metanogener findes i myrer og torvbåde. De er også til stede i permafrosten og gletscherne. De har brug for et iltfri miljø med neutral eller let alkalisk pH og mindst 50% vand.
