Metanogeny
Metanogeny są to archeony, które w wyniku oddychania produkują metan – palny gaz cieplarniany, który powstaje w wyniku beztlenowego rozkładu szczątków roślinnych. Środowisko metanogenów musi być pozbawione tlenu, posiadać pH neutralne lub lekko alkaliczne i musi zawierać przynajmniej 50% wody.
Najwięcej metanogenów występuje w bagnach i na torfowiskach. Są obecne również w wieloletniej zmarzlinie oraz na dnie lodowców.
