Nilas eða nýr ís er eitt af fyrsta stiginu í að sjór frjósi aðallega á lygnu vatni. Þetta er þunn (undir 10 cm á þykkt) breiða af ís, með viðkvæmri skel sem er mött og dökk á yfirborðinu, verður ljósari þegar ísinn þykknar. Nilas þykknar niður á við. Mjög þunnar ísbreiður renna yfir hvor aðra og mynda þykkri ís.
