Metanogener er arkebakterier som i sin pusteprosess produserer metan – en brennbar drivhusgass som er produsert ved anaerob nedbrytning av planteavfall. De fleste metanogenene finnes i myrer og torvbåter. De er også til stede i permafrosten og isbreene. De trenger et miljø som er oksygenfritt, med nøytral eller litt alkalisk pH og minst 50 % vann.
