Polar vortex
Polar vortex er en form for jetstrøm, hvor luft i stratosfæren blir fanget i en virvel, noe som forhindrer at luften i virvelen blandes med luften rundt. Hvis denne brytes kan det skje brå og uventede værforandringer. Vi har to store slike polare virvler, en over arktiske strøk og en over Antarktis. Den antarktiske virvelen er alltid fast over det antarktiske kontinentet, sentrert over Sørpolen. Den arktisk er derimot mer tilbøyelig til å deformere.
