Troposfæren er et lag av jordens atmosfære som ligger mellom bakken og opp til omlag 14 km høyde. Temperaturen her avtar raskt med økende høyde (se figur). Siden varme luftmasser har en tendens til å stige mot kaldere, mindre tette luftmasser over det (og motsatt), blir luften hele tiden blandet på alle høyder i troposfæren.
