Arkebakterier

Arkebakterier er enkeltcellede organismer uten cellekjerne som vanligvis lever i ekstreme miljøer. De skilles fra «ekte bakterier», den andre gruppen av organismer uten cellekjerne (såkalte prokaryoter).

Genetiske studier har vist at arkebakterier er nærmere beslektet med eukaryoter (dvs. organismer med cellekjerne) enn det de ekte bakteriene er, og kan til og med ha vært utgangspunktet for utviklingen av eukaryoter.
