Pingo

En pingo er en konisk eller aflang bakke, eller endda dome-formet forhøjning der består af et jordlag der dækker over en stor kerne af is. De forekommer i de fleste områder, hvor permafrost forekommer.  En pingo består af massive lag af is der er dannet under hydrostatisktryk.

Der er to typer pingoer: Åben-system pingoer og lukket-system pingoer. En åben system pingo har en åben kanal, der supplerer med artesisk vand. En lukket system pingo dannes af begrænsede vandforsyninger, der er fanget i en sø der fryses ude fra kanten og ind.

Pingoer kan blive op til 70 m høje.
