Gatunek wskaźnikowy to taki gatunek (zazwyczaj fauny/flory), który jest wysoce charakterystyczny dla stanu środowiska, w którym bytuje, jest bowiem wrażliwy na jego zmiany. Przykładami mogą być porosty, wskazujące na niski poziom zanieczyszczenia powietrza, lub niektóre grzyby, charakterystyczne dla starodrzewów.
