Skamieniałość
Skamieniałości są szczątkami lub śladami działalności życiowej (skamieniałości śladowe) zwierząt lub roślin. Zwierzę lub roślina ginie, a jego szczątki zostają przykryte młodszymi osadami. Z upływem czasu, w wyniku diagenezy, osad staje się skałą. Po jakimś czasie ich powierzchnia podlega erozji i ostatecznie skamielina zostaje odsłonięta.
