Archea janë organizma jo-bërthamorë njëqelizor, të dalluar nga eubakteret (“bakteret e vërteta”), zakonisht që jetojnë në mjedise ekstreme, të dy grupet që u përkasin prokarioteve.
Ata fillimisht mendohej se ishin evolucionarisht më të vjetër se bakteret e vërteta; Megjithatë, tani dihet se këto grupe kanë evoluar paralelisht dhe janë po aq të vjetër. Studimet gjenetike kanë treguar se archea janë shumë të ndryshme nga bakteret dhe janë më të lidhur ngusht.
