The Polar Code

An international legislation framework, led by the International Maritime Organization – IMO, protecting Polar Regions from maritime risks. It contains new regulations on the safety of life at sea and on the prevention of pollution from ships. All ships operating in the harsh and challenging waters of the Polar Regions must fulfill the Polar Code regulations.

The Polar Code entered into force on January 1. 2017. The full name is, the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters. The Code´s implementation is due to the trends and forecasts that indicate that polar shipping will increase and diversify over the coming years. The strict requirements of the Code will contribute to minimizing the negative impact of shipping operations on the sensitive polar environment as well as increasing seafarer’s security.
