Invertebrate
Invertebrates are animals that do not possess a spine (in a contrast with a vertebrate, which is an animal with a spinal cord surrounded by cartilage or bone). Familiar examples of invertebrates include insects, crabs, lobsters, snails, clams, octopuses, starfish, sea-urchins, and worms.
The majority of animal species are invertebrates. One estimate puts the figure at 97% of all animal life.
