Psychrophiles eru örsmáar jaðarlífverur sem geta vaxið við lágan hita. Hópurinn inniheldur bakteríur, fornbakteríur, ger og nokkrar einfaldar plöntu- og dýrategundir. Lífverurnar eru ekki aðeins færar um, heldur dafna best við lægri hitastig. Þessar lífverur búa við hitastig nálægt frostmarki vatns og eru ekki háð hitastýringarkerfum.
