Fitoplanktoni
Fitoplanktoni janë organizma mikroskopikë që jetojnë në mjedise ujore, të kripura dhe të freskëta. Disa fitoplanktone janë baktere, ndërsa disa janë protiste. Shumica janë njëqelizore.
Ashtu si bimët tokësore, fitoplanktoni ka klorofil për të kapur rrezet e diellit, dhe përdorur fotosintezën për ta kthyer atë në energji kimike. Ai thith dioksid karboni (CO 2 ), dhe nxjerr oksigjenin në atmosferë. Të gjithë përdorin fotosintezën fitoplankton, por disa marrin energji shtesë duke konsumuar organizma të tjerë.
Rritja e fitoplanktonit varet nga disponueshmëria e dioksidit të karbonit, rrezet e diellit dhe lëndët ushqyese.
