Ránfugl sem býr á Norðurslóðum. Engin sérstök einkenni greina karlfuglinn frá kvenfuglinum. Fuglinn verpir í stórum byggðum á klettum, oftast í nálæg við aðra fuglategundir (svo sem haftyrðil sem hann veiðir).
Hvítmáfur er farfugl og fer í burtu í september og október en kemur aftur á varpsvæðin í mars eða apríl. Á vorin eru refir aðal ógnin fyrir eggin og ungfuglana.
